Some people say you (as in the average recreational diver) shouldn't have knife because it might encourage you to use it for ecologically unsound things - especially cutting yourself souvenirs. The obvious counter-argument is, well, don't do that.
The main reason for having a knife is in case you get tangled in kelp or nets - if you (or your buddy) can't free yourself, you will drown. That's a pretty rare situation, and having to fight a hostile fish is rarer. So there isn't really much reason to carry a speargun for self-defence, but if you are actually planning to catch fish, doing it with a speargun is a lot more sustainable than almost any other form of fishing. Mostly, recreational diving is about looking, not touching, and often takes place in sites which are marine reserves, so fishing isn't appropriate. On the other hand, in order to prevent over-fishing there are places where it's ONLY permitted to spearfish.

Neutral Party here, I just wanna chime in real quick.
Libertarians don't believe the free market will solve everything, just most things. Certain things, most significantly civil rights, must be protected using force. What libertarians don't agree with however is using force in order to alter the outcomes of inequality unless the population agrees to it. According to libertarians, the role of government is the protection of life, liberty, and property, not to the equal outcome of using such freedoms. All individuals should be equal under the law and their life and liberties protected, but it is not the governments responsibility or role to ensure an equal measure of property or happiness, only to ensure that rights to that property is protected.Sent from Mail for Windows 10
