The alarm volume is directly connected to your ring volume. You have to turn your ring volume all the way up before going to bed. I also think think this is a poor way of handling alarms. Android sets alarm volumes to loud regardless of the ring volume (and it can be changed independently of the ring volume), that's why you don't encounter the issue using an android phone.
Edit: also forgot to say I'm sorry about your job. I can see how that could happen very easily. There have been times where I forgot to turn my volume up before bed and I barely woke up in time for work.
