  Hi,

  The media players control the event state machines but as the media players are part of the formatter it is not wrong to say that the formatter maintains the event state machines.

  Some examples are better to make it clear.

  Suppose that a video is playing (<media>) and it has an interval anchor on 12s (<area ... begin="12s")>). In this example, when the video playback reachs 12s, the media player related with that video will make the event state transition "starts" on that anchor in order to trigger any link with the condition based on this anchor.

  The links are based on a condition (simple or compound) and an action (simple or compound). When a link triggers, it acts over other event state machines. In this sense, it is not the media player related with the condition that will change other event state machines, but the formatter will do. This is the reason why the profile says that the formatter [maintains] the event state machines.
